Curator’s Favorites

Howdy everyone! Your friendly Curator here! Here is my top 11 list of some of my favorite anime (in no particular order):

  1. Yu Yu Hakusho
One of my all time favorites! I go back to this show anytime I can’t think of something to watch or even when I need a little pick-me-up. Its full of sarcasm, snarky-ness/attitude, humor, and action. A slightly more adult show, as there is more cursing. In my opinion, to get the full appreciation of the sarcasm and humor of the characters you should watch it in English dubbing.
Yusuke is dead…however upon being revived he realizes he can see other creatures not from his world and he has strange powers. Hired by the Spirit Prince Koenma, it is now Yusuke’s job to hunt down demon criminals who have broken the spirit world laws, to keep the balance of the worlds in check.
  2. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
One of the very first anime I really got into. I prefer the Brotherhood series more than the original because I found that it follows the manga story more, not to mention the animation quality appears better. This is full of drama and suspense, but there are also humorous moments as well. I love the English voice acting in this anime!
Meet Edward and his younger brother Alphonse. After performing the taboo alchemy of human transmutation and loosing their bodies, Edward and Alphonse travel the world trying to learn of ways to get their original bodies back to normal. How far are the boys willing to go to return what they have lost? And at what cost?
  3. D. Gray-man
An accidental find on my part, I stumbled across this while looking for new shows to watch. I was immediately intrigued by the concept of the story and the characters. I love it, and wish that it would continue past the second season. I also prefer to watch this anime in subbed version.
Meet Allen Walker, an exorcist whose job it is to exterminate and cleanse the souls of the akuma. As Allen travels the world with his friends, hunting down and trying to stop the plans of the Earl and other Noah, he discovers things about his past that he had forgotten…things that might link him to the Earl in more ways than he originally thought…
  4. Blood +
I stumbled across this while flipping through tv channels one night. The story captured my attention with the characters and overall plot. Its an interesting take on a “vampire” story. Action, drama, blood, slight romance.
Follow Saya with her adoptive brothers as they hunt down Chimera, vampire like creatures, around the world as Saya attempts to unravel the mysteries of her past and confront her greatest enemy.
  5. Black Butler
Recommended to me by a friend several years ago. At a convention I was able to listen to the English voice actors for two of the main characters speak, and it captured my curiosities. I watched the first couple of episodes and before I knew it I had binge watched the entire first season.
Join the main character Ciel as he tries to solve the mystery of his parents murders, while also following in the footsteps of his father the Earl of Phantomhive in working for the Queen of England solving underground crimes, with the help of his demon butler Sebastian.
  6. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
After watching an AMV I found online to this particular anime I was very intrigued. I looked it up, and once again had binge watched an entire first season of the show in a matter of a few days.
It’s full of drama and suspense as we follow estranged prince Lelouch through his journey of cunning and conniving efforts to find answers to the murder of his mother and the reclaiming of his place as prince of his country.
  7. ERASED
A newly found favorite of mine! The story is suspenseful and dramatic as you travel with the main character trying to solve the mystery of a murder that occurred during his childhood. Can he change the future by traveling to the past?
  8. Ouran High School Host Club
Another one of my go-to feel good, happy, need-a-laugh anime. The English dubbed version has some of my favorite voice actors in it!
Follow the main character, Haruhi, as she tries to fit into her new role as a host in her prestigious rich school as she goes along with all of her newly found friends escapades.
  9. Charlotte
Another newly found favorite. This anime is somewhat sweet with touches of drama mixed into an almost comical piece. Follow the story of the main character as he uses his supernatural powers to assist the student council in finding more supernatural ability users to recruit to their school.
  10. Yuri On Ice!!!
One of the rising stars since its debut a year ago, Yuri On Ice!!! is a hit! I prefer the Japanese voice acting, and watch the English subbed version. Follow the story of an Olympic ice skater as he tries to redeem himself after a crushing defeat. Great character development and animation, with lovely music. Can’t get enough of it!
  11. Darker than Black
I happened upon this on accident, and I don’t regret it one bit! A dramatic, action packed sci-fi story with interesting characters.
In a world where the stars no longer exist and the sky is fake and a giant wall separates the world, people with supernatural powers, called Contractors, are emotionless rational beings who must pay a price for using their abilities (called their contract) and are hated by the people who know the exist. They do what they want however they want, kill without remorse and reason. Follow Hei, a rare contractor who doesn’t have to pay a price to use his abilities, as he tracks down other Contractors to learn the secrets of his past while working for the Syndicate, an organization bent on destroying the gate and eliminating all Contractors.

Hey everyone! This is the Curator, Coral! As an avid anime fan, and a self proclaimed otaku, I have several favorite anime. I began my anime journey with many of the classics my generation grew up watching such as Pokemon, Digimon, Sailor Moon, etc. As I got older and my tastes developed I grew to like several more mature anime. By “mature” I simply mean that the anime and manga tends to have more complex themes, character development and story lines. The genres I tend to watch are historical, dramatic, romance, and Shonen.

On this page you can see my personal recommendations, and my personal favorites!
